Mental Health Awareness Letters – 16th May 2018

As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, I had an idea to write a letter each day to a person, or group of people that have had an impact on my own personal health. The first portion of the month has been delayed, however I hope that I will catch up and there will be a daily post. Embracing your Needs – With Help from The Mighty.

This letter is all about helping others, I hope by sharing these files/images with you that you can either use them for yourself or share them with others that you feel could benefit from them.

Letter 15 – To The Mighty

I first Discovered The Mighty a few years back, and have written some pieces for the site.

If you haven’t seen the website, please head over to the site as there are several pieces about life with chronic conditions, written by us!! real people who are living with these conditions every day. There are also pieces about parenting and lifestyle.

The Mighty has helped me through times when I needed something to do to take away negative feelings, helped me when I have been confused and helped me learn about my conditions and allowed me to find a community that actually understands-rather than those that just say they understand for the sake of it.

It is definitely worth a look, even if you are a parter, friend or relative of someone who suffers from difficulties, there is something there for you too!!

June 1st Milestones

Well Hello June!!

After midnight which now makes it June 1st my site hit some milestones;

  • 100 Posts – Which will increase over the next few days as my backlog of May Mental Health awareness letters will be uploaded.
  • 1,000 Hits.

I cannot believe that many people actually read about my life and my goals of tackling mental health. I hope I have helped some people along the way.

Letter 13 – To my fellow Open University Students,

Another short and sweet post, but thank you to my friends and fellow students at The Open University.

I have never met any of you but I would trust the friends I have made throught the OU with my life-it is nice to meet people who understand your ways of life.

Letter 12 – To Norway,

First of all, you are a beautiful country and I am so grateful to have experienced everyone and everywhere I travelled.

In May 2011 I made an impulsive application to go abroad and volunteer in Norway. It was a perfect opportunity for me, but it was a quick decision (timeframe between applying and flying – less than 1 Week!) I was 5/6 months out of a breakup with a guy who I considered the love of my life. I wanted to marry him, have children, a home and grow old. But that was not meant to be.

Norway is beautiful, the water, the homes, the culture and the people. Unfortunately, there was an incident in 2011 when I was in Norway involving one not so beautiful or kind person. Resulting in fear and the loss of life of several people. I mourned with Norway the loss of these people and Norway is strong and not scared of this monster.

Moving to Norway gave me time to explore, work and travel as well as meet some really nice people and provide me with unforgettable memories.

Looking back at the decision to go it was impulsive and I didn’t consider finances and things like my car, I just wanted to leave. I am so glad I did.

Letter 11 – To my ovaries,

You have had a huge impact on my mental health. I always said I wanted kids young, at 14 when my youngest sister was born my broodiness ‘peaked’ but I knew I had to finish school first and be ‘sensible’ (I would like to point out that I do not judge those that have children young, I just wanted to be realistic in my situation). Looking back now I should have not been so sensible and just tried to conceive then.

I said I wanted to be having (at least) my second child by the time I was 25. I am now 27 and have no children. I did suffer a miscarriage several years ago very early into the pregnancy, but I am not a mother. My best friend has a child and most of my school friends have children.

I had my first surgery when I was 18 to remove two large cysts within my ovary. I have polycystic ovarian syndrome and unfortunately this has an impact on my whole body. My hair, my weight, metabolism, glucose tolerance and I need to get my BMI down to qualify for NHS support for IVF as I cannot afford to pay for it privately. Losing weight is difficult and I find myself constantly putting it on rather than losing it. (I would also like to point out I am not publicising weight loss but in my case it is medically compulsory to qualify for fertility treatment.)

My ovaries do not ovulate and the one thing I long for is children, obviously being in a same sex marriage completely stops the chance of getting pregnant when least expecting it and sperm donors are hard to come by. (Unless you can pay for access to sperm banks)

So, to my ovaries, I wish you would get your act together as you and me are not best friends!!

Letter 10 – To Demi Lovato,

I have watched your struggles and you have inspired me to speak out and get help. You often see celebrities all coming out with their stories once the word is out, but with Demi I genuinely felt your pain and felt your honesty.

Your music speaks to me on an emotional level and I just want to thank you for all the work you are doing in the mental health community.

I don’t really know what to say other than thank you.

(Although if you branch out to the UK for mental health services I would love a job 🙂 )
